DEAD POETS SOCIETY
Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams .
Plot Summary:
This is the story of students at the respected "Welton Academy," a preparatory school in Vermont. Such schools were (and often still are) very conservative institutions that serve as high schools for parents who insist on sending their children to the best universities. Welton, like many prep schools, admitted only boys.
The movie takes place in 1959. The plot centers on the influence of Mr. Keating, a young and exciting English and poetry teacher, who is determined to teach his students to live life with absolute passion. Mr. Keating, using poetry as his vehicle, teaches his students to challenge the institutions around them. Inspired by Mr. Keating's philosophy of life, many of his students recreate the "Dead Poet's Society," a secret club which meets in a cave in order to discuss poetry, philosophy and other topics. The club, which Mr. Keating had created many years earlier when he was a student at Welton, would be completely unacceptable to the conservative school, which discourages students from "thinking for themselves." Indeed, Welton students should be in their rooms, studying only the prescribed materials that their teachers assign. This movie is about what happens when these students decide to pursue their own desires, and to live life with the passion that Mr. Keating encouraged.
Ultimately, it is about what happens when a few idealistic students find themselves confronted against conservative forces that resist all change, including the drive for personal self-determination.
When I watched this film , I was affected very much. I think evey candidate of teacher should watch it before become a teacher. It is very fascinating and instructive film for me. I can watch it many times without fedding up.
DEATH IN BABEL, LOVE IN İSTANBUL
I want to mention about 'Death in Babel, Love in İstanbul' by İskender Pala. I have finished this book one week ego and ıt is one of the books I have most liked, so I advice it everyone. Because this book shows us some parts of Ottoman history by telling the advantures of L&M book . It is a charming journey that has a wonderful language and expression. Topic of The Book: A blind librarian gives Fuzuli a dragger and secret about BUAM. Fuzuli writes L&M book and hides this secret between lines of poetry with some codes. After that this book goes everywhere and lives, sees a lot of things. However, some people who try to find this code and want to have BUAM's treasury, chase L&M. With this book you can a lot of things about Ottoman ,its sultans, well known poets and that period. It is both historical and literary book. In this book love is told in a very different way from we know. There are so many and such beautiful poems in book that they make you relax and feel very good. For example, some lines affected me very much ,so I want to share some of them: 'sevgili uğruna canlarını öyle verirler ki,bir daha can verebilmek için tekrar dirilmek isterler' 'aşıklar uykusuz geceler olmadan huzur bulamazlar. Bu yüzden doğuda aşıklar yıldızların çobanı olarak bilinirler' If you like history and literature , you certainly should read it. While I was reading the book, it gave me so pleasure that I did not want to finish it. |
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Domestic violence against women is a big problem for long years in Turkey. However, it is no more a 'family affair' because today domestic violence to women is everyone's business and a society problem.
Years ego, people(women)did not say anything about their family problems and violence. In addition, even if they mentioned about such things, other people around them did not help and interfere them. Now, everything has changed, the society owns every women's violence problems.
Why people have changed???
People do not want to see such violence against women around them because it is a bad thing,so they want to stop it. People, especially women, react it because they are afraid of being exposed to same situation one day.
In addition, now people(especially women)are more conscious than past. Today, number of women who go university, have a good job and an important place in society is increasing, of course so do men. As educational level is getting high, people are becoming more conscious about their and other's rights, so they can protect themselves.People want to help those women who exposed to violence. Most women are not supported or secured by their family and environment, even many time they are exposed to violence by their family.
They try to cope with this problem on their own , so the society does not want to leave them alone. They support them.
To conclude violence is no more ignore by society thanks to increasing conscious, fear of being same situation and willing to help these people.

RAMADAN DRUMMERS
Firstly, Ramadan drumming is one of the most important traditions for us for long years. It is a herald of Ramadan and it reflects soul, excitement of Ramadan process with traditional mani(s). For example, during my childhood it was a very enthusiastic that waking up and to be able to see drummer for me. Therefore, not to let it dissappear like other traditions and new generations should live same feelings, too.

Ramadan drumming is not only to make people awake, but also it is played to get unity between people and to share happiness of the holiest mont. For this reason, some technological devices such as clocks , mobile phones can not replace Ramadan drumming.
Secondly, Ramadan drumming is a crucial source of income for some people. Because this tradition has a long history, some people are doing it as a job. Therefore, abolishing this tradition ,also, means making those people jobless.
All in all, Ramadan drumming should not be abolished in terms of tradition and income.
